This was the largest battle in Europe prior to World War I.

    In the Treaty of Fontainebleau, the victors exiled Napoleon to Elba, an island of 12,000 inhabitants in the Mediterranean, 12 miles off the Tuscan coast. They gave him sovereignty over the island and allowed him to retain his title of emperor. Napoleon attempted suicide with a pill, but he survived to be exiled while his wife and son took refuge in Austria.

    Congress of Vienna declared Napoleon an outlaw, banished from the empire, Napoleon's only hope lay in adopting his old strategy of delivering a decisive blow against the enemy's forces to force a negotiation. At Waterloo Napoleon was overwhelmed by British and Prussian forces, forcing him to abdicate for the second and last time. Napoleon was deemed a prisoner in British custody and was exiled to St. Helena where he lived until his death on 5 May 1821

The defeat at Waterloo ended Napoleon's rule as Emperor of France, marking the end of his Hundred Days return from exile, pursuing coalition forces entered France and restored King Louis XVIII to the French throne.
