Black Gold
In 1859, Edwin L. Drake used a steam engine to drill for oil near Titusville, Pennsylvania. Removing oil from beneath the earth's surface. His breakthrough started an oil boom that spread to Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indian, and later Texas. -
Panama Canal
The United States needed a canal cutting across Central America. The Canal would greatly reduce the travel time for commercial and military ships by providing a shortcut between Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. The constructions of the Panama Canal had some of the world's greatest engineering feats such as builders fought diseases, yellow fever and malaria. -

A golden spike marked the spanning of the nation by the first transcontinental railroad. The nation had about 30,000 miles of track. By 1890, that figure was nearly six times greater. -
The Great Stike of 1877
In 1877, the workers of Baltimore and Ohio railroad struck to protest their second wage cut in two months. Most state governors asked the president to intervene and the federal troops ended the strike. -
PullMan
George M. Pullman built a factory for manufacturing sleepers and other railroad cars in Illinois. The town Pullman built was for the employees followed in part the models of earlier industrial experiments in Europe. -
War Fever Escalates
The Spain responded to Cuban revolt by sending General Valeriano Weyler to Cuba to restore order. Estimate of a thousand Cubans Died from hunger and different diseases. -
Platt Amendment
A newly formed Cuban government wrote a constitution for an independent Cuba. The United States made it clear that its army would not withdraw until Cuba adopted the Platt Amendment. -
Alaska
In 1959, Alaska became a state. It was about two acres for land. United States had acquired a land rich in timber, minerals and also oil.
