Gov Janet Napolitano declares a stae of emergency along arizona's border with mexico, a move that allowed her to free up 1.5 million in disaster funds to help fight against immigration and drug smuggling. However she also criticizes the federal government for moving to slow on border security. -

20,000+ Latinos march up and down 24th street in phoenix to protest federal legislation that would criminalize undocumented immigrants. The rally ruined traffic and shut down businesses and caused ruckis in communities. -

A crowd of more than 100,000 marches and rallies in phoenix to support legalization for millions of undocumented immigrants. The crowd is peaceful but very loud. -
English the language of Arizona!
They approved a measure that makes english the official states language. All four ballots pass with a 70 percent plus vote. Voters also a trio of ballot measures related to illegal immigration , including recquiring out of state college tuition from arizona residents who can't prove citizzenship. -
Fining Employers
This is a law stating that there are possible fines against emplyers who hire illegal immigranta. Opponents fear it will wreak havoc on industries key to Arizona's economy, including construction. -
Joe Arpaio
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Phoenix mayor phil gorden clash over arpaio immigration sweeps, including one where arpaio deployed 200 members of his civilian possee and deputies to saturate an east phoenix where day laborers congregate. The fued culminates in April when gordon calls on the FBI to investigate whether arpaio has violated any civil rights law. -
Tent City
Arpaio announces he plans to move hundreds of illlegal immigrants to a segregated area of the tent city complex to serve the rest of their sentences. Arpaio calls the plan a money saving measure. -
