Infancy: Trust vs Mistrust Age 0-1 year old
A newborn's way of thinking is based off of whether or not they can trust their caregiver. If a baby cries when they are hungry and nobody comes, they will develop mistrust that their needs will not be met. This is the first important type of communication your child will develop in their life. -
Early Childhood: Initiative vs guilt Age 3-6 years old
During early childhood, kids are now capable of planning events in an intentional way, and is now capable of feeling guilt when harsh judgment is given as well. This is important for development because it allows the child to learn from their social group how to interpret their thoughts. When a child wakes up, they know to change from their pj's to clothes, and when it's not weather appropriate, the parent reacts harshly to correct this action. -
Adolescence: Identity vs Identity Confusion Age range: 10-20 years old
Adolescence is the time frame when not just physical and biological changes occur, but rather advanced cognitive development about themselves. This is the stage when children reach sexual maturity and have thoughts about who they are as an individual person among their peers and in their family. This stage of development is important because their thought process has advanced dramatically and can impede their self image and their actions with others.
