Read My First Book
My Grandma sat down with me, and I read 'Sand Cake' by Frank Ash (I still have it). I was four years old. I remember something just kind of clicked, and I read fluently after that. -
Had the same teacher for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade
I was in a multi-aged classroom for my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade years. My teacher strongly pushed reading. I read well beyond my grade level.
(This is Mrs. Lehl- we still keep in contact. She was a phenomenal teacher!) -
Loved reading and would read multiple chapter books per week
Still with the same teacher, I would sometimes read a chapter book in one day. There was another boy in my class who was also reading at a higher level. Him and I would often be removed from the rest of the class and put with a parent volunteer for reading. -
Scholastic Book Fairs
My mom highly encouraged my love for reading and would never say no to buying books. The Scholastic Book Fairs were the highlight of elementary school! -
Discovered my love for non-fiction
In 5th grade, we were to write a biography on a person in history whom we most admired. I chose Princess Diana and started to acquire different materials about her life. That sparked a newfound fondness of non-fiction. I started reading a lot of non-fiction and historical fiction after that. -
Magazines became my preferred reading material
As I headed into my teenage years, my text of choice became magazines over books. Much like books, my mom would not say no to magazines, and I had multiple monthly subscriptions. -
Discovered Syvia Plath
My first year of college, we did a poetry unit in English. I discovered and fell in love with Sylvia Plath. I started reading and writing poetry often. She is still my favorite poet -
Became a stay-at-home
When my daughter was born and I became a stay-at-mom, I had lot more time for reading. Not only did I read a lot myself, but I started reading to her on the day I brought her home from the hospital. -
Found the BEST little used bookstore
I came across a cute, very affordable little used bookstore in Carson City. I expanded my book collection extensively and found a new genre favorite.....thrillers. -
Currently an avid reader of all genres!
Becoming a mom and preparing to be a teacher, I have started collecting children's books. I have written my own children's books that I am currently trying to get them published. I hope to instill the same love of reading I have always had, into my daughter. We read for an hour every night. I truly believe that there is no greater educational resource out there than sitting down and reading out loud to your children. I myself, read every day as well, switching up my genre selection often.
