My Reading Growth in 7th Grade - Lily Walsh

  • Summer Reading - Slob

    Summer Reading - Slob
I would rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars. The main character, Owen Birnbaum tries to make a new TV, so he can watch something he never got to and needs to see so everything in his life makes sense. Also, he attempts to find out the mystery of who keeps taking his Oreos at lunchtime. He learns more about who the people in his school are, and how to successfully make it through middle school. I liked the realistic factor to this book, and the readers may be able to relate to Owen's struggles.
  • The Outsiders

    The Outsiders
I would rate this book a 4.5/5 stars. A group of troublemaking boys, The Greasers, go through crazy adventures together, some enjoyable and others life-changing. The age gaps and different characteristics between the boys make their personalities very divergent, and makes the book very interesting to read.
  • 1st Marking Period Book - Four

1st Marking Period Book - Four
I would rate this book 4.5/5 stars. The main character Tobias Eaton, preferably called Four by his friends, is starting his new life in his new faction, Dauntless. His previous faction, Abnegation, was much too peaceful for Four's liking, and Four wanted to have a more exciting life than he would in Abnegation. He has adventures and learns much more about who to trust in life. I like how this book was always action-packed, there was never a time when I got disinterested with this book.
  • 2nd Marking Period - A Snicker of Magic

2nd Marking Period - A Snicker of Magic
I would rate this book 4.5/5 stars. The main character, Felicity Pickle has never lived in one place for longer than six months, so she really wants to try and find a forever home. When she arrives at the town, Midnight Gulch, she feels like there's someone special about this certain place, so she goes on expeditions to find out what makes this town unique. I enjoyed that this book seemed like it was realistic fiction at first, but became fantasy as the plot continued.
  • Literature Circles - Hatchet

    Literature Circles - Hatchet
I rate this book 4/5 stars. Brian Robeson has been stranded on a Canadian forest, at age 12. He has to try his best surviving in the wilderness, making his own food, and making a successful shelter. The forces of nature act as obstacles in his journey, but Brian attempts to find ways around the obstacles to survive. I enjoy the detail that the author put inside this book, making the few events in the novel sound exciting.
  • 3rd Marking Period - Fangirl

    3rd Marking Period - Fangirl
I rate this book 5/5 stars. Cath, a new college student who still loves the things she liked in middle school, is having a hard time letting go of her past. Her schoolwork and her fanfiction are hard to tackle at the same time, so she has to try her best controlling her hobbies/schoolwork. I especially liked the character's personality in this novel, they were all very unique and fun to read about.
  • The Giver

    The Giver
I rate this book 4/5 stars. The main character, Jonas, was chosen as the most important job in his society, The Receiver of Memory. He has to go through severe and painful training in order to do his job successfully. He learns more about himself and the society in this journey. I liked the Utopian feel to this novel, and how everything seemed futuristic.
  • Self-Assessment

    Self-Assessment
I think I have grown this year as a reader and a thinker while reading books. I think this is because I know mainly read and prefer realistic fiction novels, compared to last year when I preferred fantasy. My lexile level also went up, so the books I now read are longer and more convoluted. Also, my vocabulary has expanded in my reading, by learning new words from the books I have read. Next year, I would like to increase my vocabulary even more, so my essays will be less repetitive.
