My Multilingual Evolution

  • Birth

    Birth
I was born to a family of a New Yorker (Dad) and a Puerto Rican (Mom).
  • First Day of School

This was the first day at the Colegio San Vicente where I met my Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Maria, who taught me my first words in English. I began schol ith only four years old.
  • First Day in a New School

I canged to Colegio San Benito where I met the best First Grade teacher ever, Mrs. Schuck. She was an American teacher who taught me not only to read in Spanish but also to read in English. She taught me phonics and all the required sounds at that moment.
  • Fourth Grade

Even though I met many new etachers that year, my English teacher Ms. Bonnie was the best. We learned so much from her. I can't really recall if it was because she was so beautiful or because she was a great teacher . I still see her every now and then around my townand still think of her as the most beautiful teacher I have ever had.
  • Middle School 7th Grade

My first day at Middle School where I also met many great new teachers, escept my English teacher. He was so boring and had awful manners. It was too bad, because I loved the language and i was into the whole Pop Era in music. I began learning English through the music I heard (Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Blink 182, Aerosmith, N*sync and many more) I still remember asking my sister for the meaning of words, since she was better than me in English, and she always told me to search for it.
  • Middle School 8th Grade

In this grade I met the most eird English teacher. He was like an Army guy! Most of the learning was created by ourselves since we had to reflect in our learning everyday and most of the teaching was based on us reading the books and make sense out of it. Even though many people say it didnt work, it kind of worked for me. I managed to read everything and make meaning out of it. He turned out to be one of the best teachers ever. He even paid a bus and took us to the beach and a Bowling Center.
  • Junior High School 9th Grade

    Junior High School 9th Grade
Oh, at first when I met the English teacher I thought "She is young. She will get us and use good ways to get to us". I was wrong. She was to strict and we were so scared of her that we didn't even try to ask her anything. Still I countinued learning English through my music and the TV. I loved repeating what the actors said and the songs. I copied the tone and pronunciation, so I could become better at the language.
  • High School 10th Grade

    High School 10th Grade
This year I met the best English teacher ever. She gave me all three High Schol years. She was so dynamic and so into getting what we loved. Even if it was boring stuff she made it so cool and simple that created in us a love for literature in all its genres. Also, she helped us to improve our oral skills with many activities in which we had to interact with others. I think these three years were the one I think I really polished the English I knew.
  • College

    College
I finally found the place where I could polish even more the language. I decided to study Secondary Level ESL, all because of my High School teacher. I wanted to be as good as her or even more. I remember Prof. Vega's class (Advanced English). It was an easy A because most of the topics and readings were given to me in high school. It was easy to participate in class and interact with others.
  • Francais

I began my studies (as electives) in French. I wanted to feel what my future students were going to feel when I stood up in front of them. I managed to learn basics of the languag by imitating pronunciation and learning conjugations deeply.
  • Practice Teaching

    Practice Teaching
First days where I had to stand in front of thirty students and use the language for 60 minutes a class. It was challenging for them to understand m, but I had to make sure that they could by using gestures, drawings and more. At this point i polished more but as a teacher even though my coopearating teacher gave me tips on the language I had to use with the students so they could understand me better. (I was using elaborate language)
  • Became an ESL Teacher

My graduation with a BA in ESL Teaching Secondary Level
  • 1st Day as a Teacher

    1st Day as a Teacher
It was very interesting how i became an English teacher having learned English by only some teachers , the TV and Music, At this pointed I decided to become the best teacher ever, taking into consideration my students'need, likes and dislikes, so i could reach to them and create the best learning environment.
  • Master's Degree

I took a chance on studying my Master's Degree because I wanted to have more interaction with adults because I wanted to maintain the apprpriate vocaulary rather than using simple one as for my students. It was a fulfilling experience because I learned so much more about acquiring a language that it motivated me even more to become the best teacher I could be.
  • Cooperating Teacher

    Cooperating Teacher
I became a Coopearting teacher where I could not only teach the language to my students but help future teachers have the tools to teach English in an appropriate way.
  • Teacher Forever

    Teacher Forever
Right now I'm studying to obtain a Blingual certification where I can improve my language skills, work as an ESL 9th grade teacher and as a professor at the UPRH. I enjoy that I master the language and that I can communicate effectively with my other English teacher colleagues. We share ideas in both languages (English and Spanish) and share the beauty of our profession.
