My Literacy Timeline

  • Mom reads to me at an early age

I definitely credit my mom for first exposing me to literature at th early age of two. She took the time to sit with me and read books daily. I would point to th pictures, turn the pages, watch her point to the words, and listened to her read. I believe this provided me with a foundation for literacy for my future years.
  • Library Reading Group

One experience that I remember was the summer reading program at the local library. I would go every week and listen to a story and we also sang songs about the alaphbet. Singing and reading about the letters of the alphabet provided me with an early foundation of letter recognition. I definitely was surrounded by tons of literature.
  • Kindergarten Begins!

By age 5, I started going to kindergarten. I remember feeling very proud because I began reading words. I was also learning to write words, although spelling needed more practice.
  • The Book Fair

When I was in the second grade I remember being so excited when the Book Fair arrived for the week. I would read the backs of the books and buy what seemed interesting. It was most exciting to select a book that I could read.
  • wrote a "book"

In third grade, I remember writing my very own book about my summer vacation. I was so proud of myself when I finally finished. I had a great teacher that year who encouraged me when it came to writing.
  • Spelling Bee

In the fifth grade, I recall competing in the Spelling Bee when I was in the fifth grade. I remember studying words in the dictionary that I thought might be in the competiton. This helped increase my vocabulary and become more cofident.
  • Middle School and Genres

During my middle school years, I can recall being exposed to different genres. I enjoyed reading non-fiction books like biographies. I just didn't like reflecting in writing on every book I read.
  • High School

I recall being in English class and how writing intensive it was. This made more of a negative impression for me.
  • College

Attending college gave me many new literary experiences. I've had to read and comprehend more challenging literary pieces. I've taken some education classes so far and most of the writing consists of reflections.
  • My Job

My job has allowed me to gain many new lterary experiences. In having the opportunity to work with children, I'm around literacy everyday. Whether it's reading a story to a group of students or assisting with writing, etc I'm surronded by literacy.
