My Literacy History

  • Welcome to Earth Day

    Welcome to Earth Day
Pretty much since birth, my parents read me tons of books. My favorite was Aladdin. Oddly enough, I don't remember being read to at all. However, something must have stuck with my subconcious because I loved reading for quite a while.
  • Kindergarten!

At a tender age of five years old, I entered Kindergarten. My teacher, Mrs. Rahe, taught me my alpahbet and set the basis to read and write. Believe it or not, I am friends with the Rahe family and helping in her classroom!
  • Learning to Read and Write

First grade is where I learned to read and write. Ms. Miller was my teacher and she was awesome! She encouraged me to read what ever I wanted as long as I was reading. I specifically remember her having us spell and read the cite word above the door every time we left the room.
  • The First Series that I Loved

The First Series that I Loved
Second grade is the first time that I can recall truly enjoying books. The particular series that I liked was Time Warp Trio. I wanted to talk to everyone about those books, and that is saying a lot considering how reserved I was as a kid.
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events Begining with an Unfortunate Event

A Series of Unfortunate Events Begining with an Unfortunate Event
My favorite set of books to read in elementary school was hands down, A Series of Unfortunate Events. I started the series in third grade, but wanted to start earlier. The year before I asked the librarian to check out the book for me, but she wouldn't since I was pretty young to read them. She said that I wouldn't be able to read them (she was wrong). It was a good thing that another person replaced that librarian and she actually took note of my reading level!
  • Writing My Own Book

In fifth grade I somehow made it into English, but not Math EL program. This was odd because I was always much better at math than I was at writing. However, I still had a lot of fun there. We spent a few months writing our own book of poems that were bound by a publisher. Thank God it was never published! The poems I wrote were pretty bad, but I learned a lot about different poem forms and it was acutally a writing assignment that I could invest in. Seeing the end result was an awesome feeling.
  • High School

    High School
Sophomore year of high school was when I really stopped enjoying reading books. This was directly caused by my English teacher forcing us to read a lot of books in a short time span. They were all older books that no one liked or understood their reasoning. This resulted in becoming frustrated with reading because it was no longer something I enjoyed. The books I were reading were dull and the overlying concepts were lost on me.
  • Reading For Fun Again

    Reading For Fun Again
I read a book of my ovwn volition this month for the first time. I won't lie, I only bought the book because my internet was out. However, I am glad that I decided to pick up Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card. I have even read another book since I finished this one.
