My Life As An Italian Immigrant

  • Born in Gallipoli, Italy

Living with my family was getting too expensive. So I decided to leave for America. There are too many droughts and not enough crops to sustain the six of us. At least three fourths of my parent's income is spent on feeding my siblings and I. I'm the only one in my family leaving Italy. I'm told that there are many jobs, so I can help them get by sending money. I'll move back to Italy soon, living in America is strictly temporary.

    Ariving At Ellis Island
As the boat sailed into Ellis Island, one of the first things I saw was the Statue of Liberty. Everyone has told that the streets are paved with gold, but I can't see any. I'm going to have to wait in line for the next few hours. I heard that we're going through several medical exams to make sure we aren't bringing any diseases into the country.

I've been at the station for several days now. I'm going to be axamined with the sevral thousand other immigrants who came with me. They checked for eye diseases. Some immigrants showed signs of it and had their clothes marked with chalk. They either wiped off the chalk or turned their clothes insideout.

I can't find any of the gold streets. I've stumbled across a neighborhod in New York with only Italians living there. Even though it's extremely crowded, it seems like home to me.
