  • Visits to the teacher center

    Visits to the teacher center
The teacher center was a facility at which my mom used to go for her biweekly teacher reunions. Every two weeks, I would get the chance to check as many books as I wanted and grab two to take out. From there my interest in books started.
  • Videogame in foreign language

    Videogame in foreign language
My aunt gave me a video game and an English-Spanish translator book. The game was only in English which was a brand new language for monolingual Spanish speaker me. From reading that dictionary and playing that game, I learned my first English words.
  • Reader of Horror Stories

    Reader of Horror Stories
I used to read horror stories. Because as a kid my friend and I did not have internet, we would purchase horror anthologies. Those would be read by me. From reading to my friends I came to feel proud of my reading skills.
  • Poem Reading Events

    Poem Reading Events
My school had an event in which students could read poems in public. I used to read poems in those events, I saw my late elementary education used to reading poetry out loud. From there I came to like reading prose.
  • Periquillo Sarniento

    Periquillo Sarniento
The first book I ever completely read without anyone telling me to read it. One day I opened it and continued to make it my daily reading for two weeks. And when I finished that one, I had to get my eyes onto another book.
  • Music

    Music
Music, through analysis of lyrics, has become a keystone of my interest in English literature. I like reading the lyrics of my favorite songs. Being analytic of lyrics, I come to be a critical reader.
  • Friends who like reading

    Friends who like reading
Though not the same kind of literature I was into, my friends were avid readers. I saw a time in which my friends and I would trade books. Having people who share the joy of reading makes reading more enjoyable, plus my friends opened me to engaging titles I would not have read otherwise.
  • Higher Education

    Higher Education
Ever since I started my higher education I have grown into everything that makes up English literacy. From reading to writing, higher education has helped me become better.
  • English Classes in the Computer Lab

English Classes in the Computer Lab
I took all my 4 English classes from High School in a single year. I was obligated to take them all if I wanted to graduate that same year. Though most likely my counselor did not expect me to like it, I ended up liking those 4 English classes crammed in my senior year. And from those English classes, I came to figure that I want to pursue a career in English. I want to help other people find the joy in reading I did not see while stuck in that computer lab.
