Newfoundland joins Canada
Newfoundland became the final province to join Canada on March 31st, 1949. -
Modern Credit Card Introduced
The first "plastic" or modern credit card was introduced in 1946 by John Biggins. By 1960, what we know simply as a "credit card" had evovled into a card used for recreational and entertainment purposes. The creation of the now much more convienient credit card in the 1940s resulted in the North American population becoming reliant on Credit, thus partly resulting in the 2008 worldwide recession and much of the debt the average person has nowadays. -
Beginning of Vietnam War
In 1960, North Vietnam head Ho Chi Minh wanted to reunify North and South Vietnam. It created a disagreement between the two countries leaders. As a result, the U.S. intervened to fight with South Vietnam, making a full scale war by 1975. -
Canadian National Healthcare
With social programs improving in Canada, the 1960s introduced what would be known as our 'trademark', free National Healthcare. The Medical Care Act of 1966 officially provided universal health coverage for every Canadian citizen. -
Dad is born
Dad is born in St. Thomas, Jamaica on July 3rd,1962. 1 month before Jamaica gained independence from Great Britain. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
Tensions between Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and U.S. President John F. Kennedy were brought to a high after Cuba was invaded by the U.S. in an effort to overthrow Castro's dictatorship. To defend himself, Fidel Castro threatened to launch missles into major U.S. cities. This resulted in a week long crisis. The Cuban Missile Crisis is significant because it resulted in all ties being cut with the U.S. and Cuba. -
Maternal grandmother immigrates to Canada
While living in Jamaica, my grandmother had no running water or electricity. As a single mom, to grant a better life for her 6 children, my grandma moved to Canada in 1972 when she was sponsored by a family friend already living in Canada. This event is significant because my grandmother is the first immediate family member on both sides of my family to move to North America. -
Grandmother finds work
Grandma finds work at Etobicoke General Hospital within the Housekeeping department in the year of 1975. This job allowed her to begin to save to bring her 6 children to Canada. -
Grandma sponsors Mom, 3 brothers to move to Canada
In May of 1975, my Grandmother had established herself enough to send for 4 of her 6 kids to move to Canada with her. -
Partis Quebequois wins provincial election
In the provincial election of 1976, Partis Quebequois, known for its separatist ideals, won. This election outcome resulted in party leader Rene Levesque bringing forth his ideals of seperatism from the rest of Canada as well as what would be known as Bill 101. -
Bill 101 Introduced in Quebec
To further distinguish Francophones, Quebec introduced Bill 101 which allowed French to be spoken in the workplace. Furthermore, commerical advertising and informational signs would now be exclusively in French. This resulted in further separation of Francophones and Anglophones in Canada. Many Anglophones living in Quebec moved out of the province due to this bill. -
Grandmother brings last of her children into Canada
In the year of 1980, my grandmother sent for her two eldest sons to come and live in Canada. -
Beginning of HIV/AIDs Pandemic
The 1980s marked the prevalence of a brand new disease in the western world called HIV/AIDs. HIV/AIDs is a defining moment for North Americans because it killed millions of people in the U.S. as well as Canada.
