Monolingual Enviroment
I was born into a monolingual family. My mother was from Puerto Rico and my father is from the Dominican Republic, both spanish speakers only. -
Elementary School
I started my elementary experience and part of it was taking the English Class. In this period of time was when the acqusition of a second language cames as mandatory. I was in the Subordinate Bilingual stage. -
Bilingual School
I started middle school in Padre Rufo Bilingual School. My progress on the acquisition of English as second language was stiil in the Subordinate stages. -
Highschool
As a highschool student in a bilingual school I still don't consider myself a true bilingual. I was semilingual person. I still struggle with the skills of listening,speaking, reading and writing in the second language. -
Books
My passion of books surface and my patient for the long wait for the book to be translated in Spanish was tested. It didn't work for me. I began acquiring English by reading. As a Late Bilingual in this time of my life I was not a "true" bilingual even though I was reading in English I coudn't comunicate almost at all. Thats why I was a Receptive Bilingual; understanding English but speaking in Spanish. -
Newphew in Oklahoma
Family and friends move to United States and among those who leave was my baby boy nephew. He is a bright boy who start speaking perfect English in just a few months. I talk to him in both languages, English and Spanish.Even though it was sad we were apart this was a great oportunity to practice my English and for him to practice his Spanish, throught the phone. -
Bilingual Teacher
I decide to do an interview to apply for a bilingual teacher position in a BEC-21 School and I was hired. Now I'm in the middle of becoming a certified bilingual teacher. I hope for the improvement of my second language to become at least a coordinated bilingual.
