    Listening - used on a record player, phased out in the 90s but came back strong around 2016/17
  • Cassette

    Listening - able to take your favourite music with you, and with the introduction of the sony walkman you could listen anywhere.
    Recording - Allowed anyone to have the ability to record audio themselves
  • Music Video

    On 1/8/1981, MTV launched onto TV as a 24 hour music video and birthed the music video, the first video shown was Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. This started a new era of artists being able express their music and themselves to their fans.
  • Portable CD Layer

    Listening- Introduced mid 80s but was popular in the 90s. able to listen to music wherever and has anti skip technology.
  • Avid Pro Tools

    Digital Audio Workstation created by Avid for windows and mac
  • Cubase

    DAW by Steinberg, originally only a MIDI sequencer released in 1989, runs on mac and windows
  • Logic (Logic Pro)

    Logic is a DAW created in the early 90s by C-Lab (Emagic) and was bought by apple in 2002 and renamed logic pro. It’s the second most popular DAW (according to a 2015 survey).
  • ADAT

    Used for recording. A magnetic tape format used for 8 track digital recording. Designed by Alesis.
  • MP3

    Can be used for listening (mp3 files on a smart device), for recording (exporting as mp3 or as a backing track) or performing (backing track given to a sound engineer)

    Limewire

    A peer to peer file sharing client which many people used to download music for free (at the risk of viruses and legal complications), got shutdown by the federal court in 2010. But now with YouTube and online converters, limewire isn’t even needed in the modern day.
  • YouTube

    Launched in 2005, YouTube is a video sharing site making it easier to show, upload and view content. it also made it easier for people to listen to music for free, plus it can give musicians a way to start getting a platform or fan base, and release music without professional help.
  • Spotify

    A place to easily find and listen to your favourite songs, and with premium which is so cheap, you can download and listen on the go (plus takes up less space than mp3s)
  • Apple Music

    A rival to spotify launching in 2015 and works on most platforms (not just iOS or MacOS)
