Musical Inventions
-
Phonograph Cylinder
Made as a modified version of the telegraph, after its invention. Adjustment of needle upon wax paper created sound vibrations. Later played with plastic tracks. Iconsistent playing, very pricy for its time. -
The 78
Similar structure and fashion to the Cylinder, but more durability, efficiency, and cost efficiency. Each disc held one song per side; its crank warped discs over time -
Vinyl: Peaked in the 1940s
Most popular musical devices from the beginning to mid 1900s. Large records, can hold entire albums on a single disc. Run risk of warping and scratching the disc when in use. Superior sound quality to all of its previous relatives. -
Reel to Reel: 1948
New style of music production. Involved use of tapes as opposed to disc scratching. Tapes ran across to reels and was read as a it moved across. Challenging to rewind, hard to fix if dropped, hissing when jumbled. -
8 Track: 1964
Similar Structure to reel to reel, but one had one reel. Much more portable than past inventions. Continuous playing, no manual setting, but often skipped tracks mid song. -
The Cassette: 1965
Most portable option of all thus far. Cassette tapes were structured and could be re-used. Introduced production of minor mixtapes.
Tape often got snarled in process of playing music. -
The Quad: Introduced in 1970s
Similar idea to cassette. Highly portable and innovative, but not produced enough to be worth anything. A few albums were recreated onto it, but it didn't have the musical variety provided by some other devices. -
CD's: 1982
First renovation of musical production in a long time, did not run on a tape and could be used a veneer to multiple other devices. Vastly overpriced in the beginning, and not enough to suffice for its originally terrible production. Remained popular into the 21st century, popularity fading in present day. -
MP3 File: 1990
First digital compilation/production of music, allowed music to be simple, portable, and always available. However, it worked throught earbuds, which are destructive to the ear. Destroyed the previously thriving record industry. -
iCloud: Current
Music and film production saved into data, needing no cellular use to transmit/play them. Can be shared among multiple devices. -
Implant Chip: 2050+
Microscopic chip inserted compatibility into the human body. Connects/interacts with the brain to readily function and play any song at any time; only heard by the user, commanded with their mind. -
Microchip: future
Musical data files can be filled with 1000s of songs, and transmitted onto a microscopic chip, which is then loaded onto a cellular device. Can be played at any time, without fail.
