    Plessy v. Ferguson
    1. Herman Plessy argued against segregation on public railroads. This was a Supreme Court case. The court ruled to keep segregation, as long as everything is separate but equal. The quality of public facilities were not equal and black felt inferior to whites. This was a huge setback in the Civil Rights Movement.

    1. This was a supreme court case in Kansas.This ruled that public schools cannot be segregated. This was a huge step for progress in the Civil Rights Movement. However, racism and racial violence was so high that this would be a difficult struggle.

    1. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. This was against the law so Parks went to jail. After this, African Americans decided to boycott buses in Montgomery, Alabama. Awareness was raised, as well as the formation of important groups, like the SCLC. Buses were eventually desegregated.

    Little Rock Crisis

    1. In Little Rock, Arkansas, Central High School was supposed to be desegregated. Nine black students enrolled but Governor Faubus sent the state National Guard to block the African American students from getting in. One black student showed up alone and had to face the racism and violence. Eisenhower had to send in troops to control the situation and protect the African Americans. This raised awareness.

    1. Black students in N.C. and Tennessee held sit-ins at lunch counters. They sat at lunch diners all day long, waiting to be served. They were non-violent. Students were beaten and sent to jail. This raised awareness and support. SNCC formed and lunch counters were desegregated.

    1. CORE went on freedom rides to the South. Their goal was to integreate interstate transportation. Blacks sat in the front of the bus and used white facilitiesin public bus stations. Riders experienced extreme violence, especially in Alabama. Kennedy sent marshalls in. Mississippi arrests the riders but interstate transportation was desegregated.

    1. This was a book by Michael Harrington about the poor in America. Kennedy and Johnson both read it. It was extremely shocking and got Kennedy and Johnson to both want to help rid poverty. Johnson was able to get many laws passed to help the poor out.

    1. Meredith won a federal court case to desergregate Ole Miss. He enrolled at the University. Governor of Mississippi, Ross Barnett, did not want to integregate the university. Kennedy got involved and sent in marshalls to protect Meredith.

    March on Washington
    1. In Washington, D.C., a huge demonstration took place. NAACP, SNCC, SCLC, and thousands of others joined in to march for civil rights. This brought a lot of people together and showed Congress all the support the movement gained. Martin Luther King gave his "I Have A Dream Speech." This was very peaceful and brought together all the support the Civil Rights Movement needed.

    1. Johnson was sworn the same day Kennedy was assassinated. He was sworn in on Air Force 1. Many people remember watching this on tv, and Mrs. Kennedy standing there right next to him. Johnson had to take on this role on one of the most tragic days in America.

    1. Extra Credit: After Kennedy's assassination, many conspiracies were brought about. Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin, was shot before trial, so no one knew if he acted alone or not. The Warren Commission was formed to investigate this. They came to the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was a lone assassin.

    1. This act banned segregation in public facilities. This also gave the government theauthority over the state to desegregate schools. It gave the Justice Department the right to prosecute anyone violated civil rights. Discrimination in employment is prohibited and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission formed to help keep this order. This is important progress the movement made.
  • Marching on Selma

    1. In Selma, Alabama, Martin Luther King Jr. and the SCLC planned a march to fight for voting rights legislation. Armed state troopers attacked the peaceful marches when they reached the bridge. They brutally beat and attacked them; they even exposed them to harmful gases. This was televised, and the awareness was raised all throughout the country. This march led Johnson to get involved to fix this problem.
