    Akbar the great comes to power

    Akbar the Great chided Philip for the anti-Protestant excesses of the Spanish Counter-reformation. Spain's Catholic inquisitors had by this time mostly rid the country of Muslims and Jews, so turned their murderous attentions to Protestant Christians instead, particularly in Spanish-ruled Holland.Although Philip II did not heed Akbar's call for religious tolerance, it is indicative of the Mughal emperor's attitudes towards people of other faiths.

    The battle of Painpat

    India's invader, Babur, was the scion of the great Central Asian conqueror-families; his father was a descendant of Timur, while his mother's family traced its roots back to Genghis Khan.
    His father died in 1494, and the 11-year-old Babur became the ruler of Farghana, in what is now the border area between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.     Humayun succeeds with difficulty

    When Babur swept down out of the valleys of Central Asia to conquer India, he was only one of a long line of such conquerors through history. However, his descendants, the Mughal emperors, built a long-lasting empire that ruled much of the subcontinent until 1868, and that continues to impact the culture of India to this day. Babur was descended from Genghis Khan.

Over time, it developed into a quasi-governmental entity in its own right, with control over a large area and a large private army.
