The Progressive Spirit
In the 1900s industrialization had changed the United States. growth was the cause for new goods and services along with an expansion of the middle class. This growth caused a gap between the rich and the poor and aroused a spirit of reform known as progressivism. -
The AFL
The American Federation of Labor was a major labor organization from the 1900-1914. Gompers used this organization structure as trust. AFL excluded unskilled workers most being European immigrants or African American. AFL believed had the skilled workers had the ability to cause change. by 1902 only 3% of workers were union members. -
The passage of prohibition
The Anti-Saloon league and the Women's Christian Temperance Union led a push against alcohol. ASL had branches in 39 states. Thousands volunteer speakers, spread messages in the nations church. During World War 1, the U.S Navy banned the consumption of alcohol in 1914. -
City planning
The city planning movement Grew out beliefs that cleaner cities would produce better citizens. The first National Conference was held in 1909, they hoped that planning could beautify cities, and stop the spread of slums. They argued that public architecture would create patriotism among the immigrant population. -
Female and child laborers
half the women in the early 1910s worked in jods like factory workers, store clerks and earned less then $6 a week. In 1916 the Commission on Industrial Relations reported that every peeny must be counted. The commissions report also attacked child labor practices. They said " The Nation is paying a heavy toll in ignorance,deformity of body or mind, and premature old age". -
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
The 500 women that worked at the New York City's Triangle Shirtwaist Company were leaving until a fire erupted in a rag bin. Escape was impossible, there was only two stairways.many leaped to there death, and more than 140 perished in the fire. Rose Schneiderman argued that only a strong movement could bring real change to the workplace.
