Moving Toward Independence

  • Albany Plan of Union

    Requested that council would levy taxes, raise armies, build forts, find new settlements, wage war, and make peace with Indians. It was rejected.
  • Period: to

    French and Indian War

    A war between the British (aided by Colonists and and Indians) against the French. The French were building Fort Duquesne in the Ohio Valley. The Colonists were defeated only to give the French all control of the Ohio Valley.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Marked the end of the French and Indian War. French gave British all of Canada and all of their land East of the Mississippi River.
  • Proclamtion of 1763

    Was to stop anymore Indian wars. Stated that all lands west of the Appalachian Mountains off limits to the Colonists. These were meant to be Indian Reserves.
  • Stamp Act

    Colonists had to pay taxes on legal documents and printed matter. This would effect almost every colonist but it ended up not being very effective.

    Townshend Act

    Taxes on clothes, lead, glass, paper, and tea. This was a direct threat to the Colonist's independence.
  • Tea Act

    Created to help the British East India Company from bankruptcy. It allowed them to import tea from Asia and India and sell it in North Carolina.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Sons of Liberty didnt want British East India tea being sold in the colonies so they dressed as Indians and threw 342 chests of tea from 3 different ships into the Boston Harbor.
  • Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts)

    These were made to punish Massachusetts.
  • Lexington and Concord

    British defeated the Colonists at Lexington and the Colonists ambushed the British at Concord.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    The British won because the Colonists ran out of ammo.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Written by Thomas Jefferson, the first section stated moral and legal reasons while the second section was a list of all of the bad things the King did to the Colonists.

    Battle of Saratoga

    General Thomas Gage ordered Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith to lead troops from Boston to Concord. During this, the French came to help the Colonists.

    Winter at Valley Forge

    Washington and his troops camped at Valley Forge durign the wnter and more than 2500 soldiers died. The French helped the Colonists during this time.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Cornwallis moved his British troops to orktown, Viriginia and their defeat meant that the War of Independence wass won by the Colonists.
  • Independence Gained

    The war officially ended when a treaty was signed in Paris.
