The Lisbon Earthquake occurred on November 1st, 1755 in Portugal. November 1st was significant for the people because it was known as all saints day. The magnitude was 9 and the death toll reached 20,000 people. The epicenter of the earthquake was 200 kilometers from Cape Vicente in the Atlantic Ocean, the southwesternmost point of portugal. -
Krakatoa Eruption
The Krakatoa Eruption happened on August 26th, 1883 between the islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian province of Lampung. The tsunami it caused killed around 36,000 people, and the eruption itself created the greatest sound ever recorded in history. The explosion shot hot ash 50 miles into the air. -
Aleutian Earthquake
The Aleutian Earthquake took place on April 1st, 1946 in Alaska. The magnitude was 8.1 and the death toll hit 160 people. The earthquake and tsunami caused over 26 million dollars in damage. The earthquake hit at 3:29 pm. -
Great Chilean Earthquake
The Great Chilean Earthquake occurred on May 23rd, 1964 in Chile. The magnitude was an astonished 9.5 and the death toll was 61 people. The quake was caused by the subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate. The epicenter was near Lumaco. -
Good Friday Earthquake
The Good Friday Earthquake happened on March 27th, 1964 in Alaska. The magnitude was 9.2 and the death toll was 130 people. It was the second most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Of the 130 people killed, over 100 deaths were from the tsunamia alone. -
Hokkaido Earthquake
The Hokkaido Earthquake hit Japan on July 12th, 1993 with a magnitude of 7.8. The disaster killed 120 people. The epicenter was in the sea of Japan and there was about 600 million dollars in property losses. -
Papua New Guinea Quake
The Papua New Guinea Quake shook Papua New Guinea with a magnitude of 7.1. The epicenter of the quake was in Northern New Guinea, and the resulting tsunami killed 2100 people and destroyed three fishing villages over a 30km stretch of land. -
Sumatra Earthquake
The Sumatra Earthquake roared across Indonesia on December 26th, 2004. The magnitude was 9.1 and with the tsunami, a total of 230,000 people lost their lives. The earthquake was so powerful it was thought to have had the energy of 23,000 atomic bombs and the epicenter was located in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Sumatra. -
Samoa Earthquake
The Samoa earthquake rocked the Samoan Islands on September 29th, 2009. It had a magnitude of 8.1 and killed 200 people. It occurred at 1:48 pm and caused immense erosional damage to the coastlines. -
Chile Earthquake
The Chile Earthquake struck on February 27th, 2010 with a magnitude of 8.8. The quake and tsunami ended up killing 700 people. It struck as 3:34 am and the epicentre was located some 200 miles southwest of the Chilean capital of Santiago. -

This earthquake struck Japan on March 11th, 2011 with a devastatting magnitude of 9.1. The natural disaaster killed 20,000 people. The country experienced more than 5000 aftershocked in the years after the earthquake, and the coastline dropped two feet as a result. -
Sulawesi Earthquake
This devastating earthquake slammed Indonesia on September 27th, 2018. The death toll is currently 1,200 but it is still rising. The magnitude was 7.4. The epicenter was in a mountainous area of Indonesia.
