    Mohandas Gandhi's Birth
    Mohandas Gandhi was born on October 2nd 1869, in Porbander, India. He was part of a wealthy and important family because his father, Karamchand Gandhi was Chief Minister of their home town. Putlibai, was Ghandi's mother and fathers fourth wife. Gandhi was the youngest of four children. His birth was significant because Gandhi would become an important political leader and activist in India. He would change the worlds way of thinking with his non violent acts of protest.

    Gandhi goes to England
    September 4th 1888 was the day that Mohandas Gandhi left India to go to England. During his early adulthood Gandhi aways seemed to seek truth and justice. With these characteristics in mind he decided to become a lawyer and go to England to obtain a degree. This was significant because Gandhi's stay in England opened up his mind to the unjust things going on in the world. It also allowed Gandhi to become a lawyer which increased his experience with argueing and protesting.

    Basketball is invented
    In 1891 a man named Dr. James Naismith, from Ontario Canada, moved to a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massuchusetts. During the winter he was faced with a problem, he needed to find a sport that could be played indoors. So in 1891 Dr. James Naismith came up with the idea of basketball.
    This was significant because it allowed people to play a sport indoors during the winter and gave kids a fun new game to play.

    Gandhi experiences racial discrmination
    In 1893 Gandhi decided to ride on a first class train, in South Africa, home. While on the train Gandhi was approached by a white man and told to leave. Gandhi was then taken off the train even though he had a perfectly good ticket. This event was significant because it caused Gandhi to stay in South Africa to fight the discrimination that took place in the country. It also was Gandhi's first time protesting for something he strongly believed in.

    In 1895 a man named Gugliemo Marconi was experimenting within his attic in Italy. There he used radio waves to transmit Morse code. This became known as the radio or as the italian inventor called it "the wireless telegraph".
    The radio was significant because it opened up a new way for people to obtain information about the world. It also provided a good source of entertainment for families.

    Gandhi developed his theory of Satygraha
    In 1906 Gandhi could see that many of Indian's rights were being oppressed. So in response to this Gandhi started a civil disobedience campaign with his motivation being the newly developed theory of Satygraha. Gandhi invented this theory to mean the constant pursuit of truth and firmness. Satygraha was significant because it made Gandhi believe that non violent protesting would be the way to succeed against Britain.

  • Titanic starts to sink

    Titanic starts to sink
    On April 10 1912 the largest and most advanced ship of its time departed from Southampton, England carrying many people. After making a few intial stops the Titanic set its course to New York. On the way, the ship was ruptured by an iceberg. Not having enough life boats for all the passengers, it sunk with many deaths.
    This event was significant because it caused ships to use extra safety percautions in the future.

    Gandhi gets the title Mohatma
    In January of 1906 Gandhi returned to India. He now was a lot more ambitous and outspoken. He insisted that Indians show some resistence against the british and become indepent individuals. One Indian who looked up to Gandhi due to his opinions, was Rabindranath Tagore who gave Gandhi the title Mahtma, meaning "great soul."
    This was significant because the title made Gandhi a very well respected and and powerful individual in India.More people listened and believed in the Mahatma.

    Gandhi was arrested
    In 1920 Gandhi finally managed to get the congress of India to encourage the civil disobedience campaign and the boycott of British goods. With their help he continued to speak out for Indian independence.Seeing him as a threat, Britain arrested Gandhi in march of 1922. He was sentenced to jail for 6 years but was then remitted allowing him to be free after 2 . This was significant because it strengthened Gandhi's civil disobedience campaign and led him to do the Salt March

    The Salt March
    In 1930 Britain passed an unfair tax on all Indian salt, outraging the many people. In response to this, on March 12 1930 Gandhi led the Salt March. He and many of his followers walked 241 miles to a beach where Gandhi picked up a handful of salt in defiance to the government. It ended on April 6 1930.
    This was significant because it encouraged a nationwide movement where peasants made salt illegally and nationalists gained faith.

    Gandhi's "Fast unto death"
    In 1932 Britain decided to separate the Indian electorate by caste. The caste was the social system in India.So by separating it Britain was oppressing, what Gandhi liked to call, the "untouchables", or the lowest rung. Gandhi was so outraged at this that he decided to fast for as long as it took for the act to be repealed. It lasted 6 days when Britain finally took it away.
    This was significant because it prevented a great divide in the Indian social classes.

    Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American professional baseball player
    On April 15 1947 Jackie Robinson made his deput with the Dodgers. He was the only African American to be playing baseball when he first started. Jackie Robinson faced many examples of racism through fans, other teams, and even people on his own team, but even all of this did not stop him from winning Rookie of the year.
    This event was significant because it brook the color barrier in a very segregated sport which allowed for more African Americans to play professionaly.

    Independence Day for India
    Gandhi's relentless protests finally proved to hard for Britain to control. In 1947 Lord Mountbatten, a viceroy from England came to sign a partition that would take the british out of India. On August 15 1947 the partition was signed and India finally gained its independence. Their independence was significant because it finally gave the country freedom and showed the world that non violent protests could work.

    Gandhi's Assassination
    Gandhi was assassinated January 30 1948 by Nathuram Godse in New Delhi, India. He was on his way to prays when he was shot in his stomach and chest. Nathrum was a Hindu who killed Gandhi because believed that he was a traitor to the Hindu religion.
    This is significant because it started many violent protest in India that caused lots of people to be harmed and killed. It also made Gandhi more well known throughout the world,leading people to consider his non violent ideas.
