X, Y, Z Affair
In order to ease tensions between the United States and France, President John Adams sent two diplomats to meet with French officials. Instead of meeting officials, the Americans were met by three agents, known as x, y, and z, and were demanded to pay money in order to meet and French officials. This was seen as bribery by Americans and angered them greatly. -

This act was created by President Thomas Jefferson in order to keep the United States out ot foreign troubles. The act stopped trade between the United States and two fighting nations: England and France. This halt of trade created big economic hardships for the United States -
Period: to
War of 1812
The War of 1812 was started because the British began to take American sailors off ships and forced them into the British Navy. This is known as impressment which made United States leaders unhappy and called for war. Even though the war was officialy ended in 1814, battles were still fought up until 1815. During the war, the White House was burnt to the ground. -
Treaty of Ghent
This peace treaty ended the war without gain for either side. It returned territory to each side that was possesed before the war started. The idea of impressment was never even discussed. The United States also gained respect for being able to defend its self. -
Monroe Doctorine
Issured by President James Monroe, the Monroe Doctorine stated the the United States would not tolerate any European actions in the affairs of independent nations in the Americas. It also stated that the Americas were no longer open to any colonization and any action like that would be seen as an act of war.
