The Proclamation of Neutrality
This proclamation stated that the US would stay neutral in the conflict between France and Great Britian. The proclamation also states that the US would take legal action against any American that is providing any assistance to a country at war. Even though both warring nations most likely wanted the US' help they declared that they were not a mercenary for hire. -
The XYZ Affair
The XYZ affiar was a political and diplomatic action in 1797 and 1798. It involved a confrontation between the US and France and lead to the Quasi war. The US demanded to speak with high French officials but instead they sent three lower class men (X,Y, and Z as history knows them) to get bribes before the US could speak with the officials. The US decliend and send a message to the other nations that they were not to be disrespected. -
The Convention of 1800
This convention was called to settle the hostilities that had come from the Quasi war. (an undeclared naval battle) The treaty called for peace among the American and French and that each was to return what they had taken from the other. (Article III) -
The Louisiana Purchase
This Louisana Purchase was the purchase of what is now the midwest of the United States of America. Napoleon needed the money and decided to sell it to the Americans. The Americans send a representative that was prepared to pay $10,000,000 for New Orleans and its neighboring areas. When the representative learned that the entire territory was up for sale for $15,000,000 he accepted and knew the US would too. This purchase gave the US a massive amount of land and send a message of expansion. -
The Embargo Act of 1807
This act essentially denied international trade with other countries and hurt the American economy. However, the Americans proved that the other nations required American goods and that American needed forign goods. -
The War of 1812
The war of 1812 was a war that went from June 18, 1812 – February 18, 1815. (The battle after the treaty of Ghent was waged because both sides didn't know the war was over.) This war was between the US and Britian. The US didn't appreciate that Britian was impressing thier sailors and trade restrictions from from Britian's war with France. During the war the British burned the white hosue down but in the end no one gained or lost any land. -
The Treaty of Ghent
This treaty ended the war of 1812 and proved that the USA had the ability to defend against attack and gained the resprect of the other nations. -
The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine states the the US was off limits to colonization and any attemps to colonize would be considered an act of agression. This bold message told the european nations that the US was off limits.
