  • Potsdam Conference

    Potsdam Conference
    From July 17th through August 2nd 1945 the allied conference was held. During the conference, churchill was replaced by clement attlee. The leaders peace settlement. It was the intention that Germans are being given the opportunity to prepare for the eventual reconstruction.

    The Vietnam war began in 1954 after the country of Vietnam was split into two parts, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Japan seized the colony in 1940 and held it until 1945. A communist named HO Chi Minh was the vietnamese president. The vietnam war had a huge cost in human lives. More than 1.3 million vietnamese soldiers and about 58,000 U.S troops were killed.     From June 1950 to July 1953 North Korea and south Korea fought at war. It was the first major battle over communism. The communism is a political and economic system which the government owes all property. The united states started to feel some type of way and feared that it would spread to other countries.

    On May 14th, 1955 the treaty was signed. In 1955 the soviet union wanted to establish a defenced alliance. The treaty was renewed for 10 years it was dissolved. The only reason why they did this because to strengthen the hold of soviet union and prevent their seeking close ties. Maintaining such control was the stationing of the soviet troops.

    The middle east precipitated on July 26, 1956. The Suez crisis was provoked by an american and British, as they had promised in response to egypt growing ties with communist czechoslovakia and the soviet union. They both worked together to get a reaction out of the americans and Britain. Nasser reacted to the American and british decision by declaring martial law in the canal zone. ( suez crisis document)

    On October 4th 1957 the soviet union launched the earth's first article. The launch was a shock and citizens of the united states would accomplish the scientific advancement first. The fact that the soviets were successful feds fear that the united states military had generally fallen behind developing new technology.

    Cuban Revolution & Missile Crisis
    On october 1962 over the installation of nuclear- armed the soviet missiles on cuba. President john kennedy notified americans about the presence of the missiles. He explained his decision to enact a naval blockade around cuba. This was basically a threat. The u.s was prepared to use military force if necessary.     Glasnost/Perestrokia
    In late 1980 the policy was instituted by soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The gorbachev launched glasnost, a program aimed at restructuring soviet economic. Glasnost was the second vital plank of gorbachev's reforms efforts. He believed that the path to economic recovery for the soviet union required the inclusion of ordinary citizens.
