First Modern Olympics
The first Modern Olymipcs took place in Athens, Greece to commemorate the ancient olympic games. French historian Pierre de Coubertin was the guidng force behind restoring this tradition. They were a success - the largest sporting event ever held. -
First Winter Olympics
Chamonix, France, in the French Alps, hosted the first Winter Olympics. There were a total of 13 events. Planning for a winter version of the Olympics had begun in 1911, but it was postponed for various reasons, including the start of WW1. The first games were called the International Winter Sports Week.
