Andrew Young is born
Andrew Young was greatly involved in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1961, he joined SCLC, an orginization run by Martin Luther King Jr, where he assisted in creating citizenship schools ( workshops that taught nonviolent organizing strategies to local people identified as potential leaders). He was instrumental in organizing voter registration and desegregation campaigns in Albany, Birmingham, and Selma. -

Herman Talamdge is elected to the US Senate where he reamined for the next 24 years. -
The SNCC Is Formed
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was formed to help remove segragation. It was key in the Albany Movement, and in Atlanta. -
Sibley Commision
The Sibley Commision is formed to help people deal with schools no longer being segregated. The organization helped the deep south with the issue, and provided tactics to local schools to help desegregate the schools.

After constantly getting rejected from UGA, Hamilton Holmes and Charleyne Hunter file a case stating that they would be in the college if not for their skin color, and this made UGA accept them. While walking to the school, the students would shout 2,4,6,8 we don't want to integrate. This created a major uproar throughout the country. -

Lester Maddox Elected as Governor
Lester Maddox defeated Ellis Arnall in the election of 1966. Lester Maddox was popular with his plans of keeping the South segregated. Lester Maddox even put up police forces in the city to prevent Civil Rights Movements, but he was still loved by Southerners, as he shared their opinions on African Americans. -
Andrew Young Elected to House of Representatives
Andrew Young becomes one of the first African Americans to be elected to Congress. While in Congress, Andrew Young helped poor and working-class Americans and opposed efforts to increase military budgets. -
Maynard Jackson elected Mayor of Atlanta

Maynard Jackson became Mayor of Atlanta in 1973. He helped small businesses get municipal contracts, but his crowned achievement was building a massisve new terminal at the Hartsfield Atlanta airport, and the name of the airport was changed to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in his honor. -
