    Prestident of Morehouse College, he taught Marthin Luther King Jr. the two developed a close relationship, Mays mentored King and helped him develop many of his principals that he later preached about during sit-in's and events such as the March on Washington

    Three Governors Race
    In the election of 1947 Eugene Talmadge died before he could be sworn in in 1947 and as it states in the GA constitution the lieutinent governor was supposed to take over. Melivin Thomson slaimed the governor position because of this, Ellis Arnall who was the previous governor refused to leave office, and while this was happening Herman Talmadge, Eugene's son, was suggested to be the governor by Eugene's supporters. Herman was later elected governor in late 1947

    Herman Talmadge was Eugene Talmadge's son and wasn't open to integration like his father. He was elected into the senate in a time of great political change, 1956. He was an apponent in the senate for many civil right supporters and provided a challenging counter argument.

    In 1956 Georgia decieded to make a new state flag; two thirds of this flag was devoted to the confederate battle flag back during the civil war era. By putting this symbol on the GA flag we stated that we still stood for what we believed in then and almost the exact opposite of what our country wanted to become in the 1950's. In 2001 a new state flag was made and was well overdue

    Sibley Commission
    The Sibley Commission created by Griffin Bell in 1960 to help the Georgian governor Ernst Vandive Jr. decide if he should close all public schools in Georgia of desegregate them. The Commission team went around Georgia asking people what their opinions were on the topic. It helped to end a massive resistance of desegregation.

    The SNCC is a youth leader's organization against segregation. They lead nonviolent protests and were very into civil rights in 1960 the SNCC chose Atlanta to be its headquarters because of the large influence blacks from the area had accomplished.

    Andrew Houng was the first African American to be elected into the House of Representative in 1972 since reconstruction, representing Georgia. In 1981 he was elected to be Atlanta's mayor, this highly influenced black power in politics. He also helped bring a big economic boost into Atlanta in 1996, the Olympic Games!

    Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA
    Back in the 1950's a fewExceptional black students were recrutied by Jesse Hill to challenge the segregated colleges of GA. He met up with Charlayne Hunter and Hamiltion Holmes and they discussed their college plans. Both studnets applied to UGA though both planned to go to Morehouse University. Both students got denied from UGA. The NAACP went into action and demanded UGA not refuse their applications just because of their race. The case went to court and both Holmes and Hunter got into UGA.

    The Albany Movement began in 1961 and lasted until 1962, it was highly supported by the SSNC ad the peaceful march that demanded change for the better. It jailed over 1000 African Americans including Martin Luther King Jr.

    In 1966 Lester Maddox was elected the Governor of Atlanta, being the popular democratic vote. When in office citizens expected him to resist desegregation, althought these assumptions were made Maddox proved them wrong by appointing African American citizens into government positions.
  • Maynard Jackson as Mayor of Atlanta

    Maynard Jackson became the first mayor of a major southern city in 1973; he served three terms and helped bring business to minority law firms. He worded with Andrew Young and helped bring the 1996 Olympic Games to Atlanta.
