  • Benjamin Mays

    Benjamin Mays
    From a fundraiser to an author to an administrator, Benjamin Mays was a very important civil rights leader. He was a part of many organazitions including the NAACP and YMCA which both improved the lives of many different citizens. He also played a major role in education for African Americans which made religisous schools seem more credible. Toward the end of his carrer, he wrote several books and soon died.
  • Governor's Race/ End of the White Primary

    Governor's Race/ End of the White Primary
    The Governor's race was a unique senario when governor Arnall refused to leave office, Talmadge's son was elected, and lieutenant governor Thompson claimed office. The supreme court eventually settled it by saying Thompson would have the right to the office but a special election would be held in 1948. This was the end of white primary because Arnall was out which now opened room for a new system of Government.
  • Herman Talmadge

    Herman Talmadge started his carrer in politics in 1947. He was elected governor but due to unusual circumstances, he was removed. He was quickly reelected in 1948 and was governor until he became senator in 1956. He discouraged desegration and the civil rights act and even wrote a book about it. He created important laws known as food stamps which helped feed the poor and make sure farmers were paid for their crops. Toward the end of his carrer he had many troubles and soon died.
  • Brown v. Board of Eucation

    Brown v. Board of Eucation
    videoIn the Brown v. Board of Education, Oliver Brown filed against the Kansas school board for denying his child into the white public school. He said that this violated the 14th admendment which gave equal protection. The case kept going up the court ladder until it reached the supreme court which sided with Brown. This was a major part in the civil rights movement because it helped integrate schools and protect the rights of African Americans.
  • State Flag

    State Flag
    In 1956, georgian leaders wanted to change the state flag. The new flag would have the confederate flag covering about 2/3 of it and it would show that Georgia will represent what it has always stood for. This meant Georgia would represent its belif of legal segregation. Because of little public hearings, the flag was passed with ease but after it was introduced, many people discouraged it because that is not what they wanted Georgia to represent. The flag was later changed.
  • Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox
    Despite his segregated restaurant by Georgia tech and rumors of him being a violent racist, Lester Maddox was a great governor who made several changes that would help African Americans. One of these changes being prison reforms and started hiring African Americans in places they had never been before. His term had several contraversies, but it was an overall successful carrer.
  • SNCC

    SNCC
    videoThe SNCC started out as a peaceful non-violent protesting group which challenged segregation and othe racial intolerances. Their main focuses were in Albany and Atlanta and they used youth to do the sit ins. Martin Luther King Jr. helped the organization and was even arrested with them. With new leadership, the SNCC started becoming more violent and racially seperate. They started working with the Black Panther Party but soon dispanded.
  • Sibley commission

    Sibley commission
    The sibley commission was a general assembly of education. Its purpose was to collect the opinions of the citizens of Georgia on desegragation. The reports helped stopped the refusal of desegregation by showing the government the people wanted change and prevented trouble with the governor and the federal government.
  • Holmes and Hunter to UGA

    Holmes and Hunter to UGA
    Holmes and Hunter both applied to UGA but were denied. They were told there was a lack of space so they kept applying semester after semester. After one last rejection, they filed a suit. The board of education argued that they would accept qualified blacks and there were interview problems with the candidates. The judge took several months to make a decesion, but he ruled in Holmes and Hunter so they were admitted in to UGA. They opened up education to African Americans everywhere.
  • Andrew Young

    Andrew Young was an African American leader of the SCLC and big in politics. He seemed to follow Martin Luther King Jr. everywhere he went, improving desegregation and helping with voter registration. He was elected to the house of representatives with another African American in Texas. This was important because it was the first time an African American was voted to the House since reconstruction.
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    The Albany movement was led by three SNCC officals and was aided by Martin Luther King Jr. It was started to challenge white power with marches and other forms of non-violent protesting. Nothing came from these marches at first because Albany police stopped it before it became too strong and divisions in the black community slowed progress. MLK thought of this as a failure, but he learned from his failue when he aided Birmingham, but the SNCC thought of it as progress.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    MLK videoThe March on Washington, despite critisim from the president, was a major success. Over 200,000 blacks and whites attedned this meeting on the lawns of Washington. There were speeches, prayers, and songs sung. MLK's I had a dream speech was said and the march was a major success.
  • Martin Luther King Jr.

    speechMartin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who lead non violent protesting in order to improve the lives of African Americans. He was a well educated man who knew how to convince many people to believe what he wanted them to believe. This was an important quality to help him be an effective leader. He also played a leadership role in many different organizations.
  • Civil Rights Act

    The document The civil rights act was a bill proposed by Kennedy before he was assinated.The passage of the bill was not easy, but it eventually was. Johnson signed it and it became a law that completly eliminated segregation from businesses, schools, and many other places.
  • Mayor Maynard Jackson

    Mayor Maynard Jackson
    Mayor Jackson was the first African American mayor in a southern city. He did many things in his eight years in office. One of the major things he did was make sure minority businesses municipal contracts and he succeeded. Another major thing he did was help African Americans rise the ranks in law enforcement so African Americans would not be treated poorly. He suceeded and was honored by becoming the Jackson in Hartsfield Jackson international.
