    The Taiping Rebellion is known as one of the most deadliest military conflicts, where at least 20 million people were killed, majority were civillians. In southern China from 1850 to 1864 the Taiping Rebellion was a massive war that took place, against the ruling Manchu-led Qing dynasty.

    Wuchang Uprising
    The uprising began with the unsatisfaction of the handling of a railway crisis. The crisis led to revolutionaries going against Quing governement officials. The Wuchang Uprising was considered to be a catalyst to the Xinhai Revolution.

    The founding of the Republic of China was made after a near complete victory against the communist Party of China . In the Chinese civil war, Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China, which is what some condered it as.

    Northern Expedition

    To unify China under its own control was the main objective of the Northern Expedition. The Northern expedition was led by Kuomintang as a military campaign from 1926 to 1928. This led to the reunification of China, the establishment of the Nanjing government, and the end of the warlord era.

    Mukden Incident

    The Manchurian Incident is another name for the Mukden Incident. The Mukden Incident was a staged event ran by Japanese military personnel as a reason for the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. A small quantity of dynamite was put close near the railway track owned by Japan's South Manchuria railway. The explosion was not strong enough to cause damage, and a few minutes later the train passed over it.

    Long March

    Rather than a long march that took place there was a series of long marches. The Jiangxi is the most well known march which began in October 1934. Mao Zedong's ascent to power was began by the Long March, his leadership gained him the support of the members of the party. Some believe that Mao's role in Long March is heavily exaggerated.

    Second Sino-Japenese War

    This war was called after the First Sino-Japanese War, a military conflict fought primarily between the Republic of China and the empire of Japan. The largest Asian war in the 20th century was the Second Sino-Japenese War. A decade long of Japenese imperialist policy was the result of the war.

    Nanking Massacre

    The Nanking Massacre occured December 13, 1937 in what was then the capital China, Nanking. It occured during a six week period when the Japanese captured Nanking. it was an episode of mass rape and mass murder committed by Japanese troops.

  • People's Republic of China admitted to UN

    The Republic of China joined the UN in 1945. The Roc kept their ownership of the UN until October 25, 1971. The United Nations then recognized the People's Republic of China as the only lawful represenative of China to the UN. The ROC lost its control of the UN and membership of the United Nations Security Council.

    The Great Leap Forward was an economic and social campaign by the communist party of China. Mao Zedong led the campaign and aimed to quickly transform the country into a communist society. Some people see the Great Leap Forward as being catastrophic in nature resulting in the tens of millions of deaths.

    Founding of People's Republic of China
    Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China upon Tiananmen. His first goal was a overhaul of the land ownership system. A distribution system in favor of poor and landless peasants. Many things were wiped out or destroyed such as drug trafficking and buildings of historical and cultural significance.

    Chinese Nationalists move Capital to Taiwan
    This event is considered to have left mainland China under communist control. They thought it might make it easier for foreign countries to recognize the newly established People's Republic of China.

  • Seventeen Point Agreement with Tibet

    The Seventeen Point Agreement with Tibet was a document that on affirming Chinese sovereignty over Tibet, in which they reached an agreement in 1951. The whole lead up to this is said to be caused by an unfair agreement written by China, and Tibetan represenatives were not allowed to suggest any alterations.

    Cultural Revolution

    The movement was started by Mao Zedong, then chairman of the Communist Party of China. Its goal was to enforce communism in the country and to impose Maoist orthodoxy within the party. The movement slowed down China and affected them politically and socially. Mao aimed to restore capitalism, and the Revolution was launched in May 1966. In response to Mao's appeal, the youth of China formed Red Guard groups around the country.

    The visit allowed American public, to see images of china for the first time. This was the first time in over two decades. The visit also included President Nixon discussing with the PRC, senior advisers, and a meeting with Mao Zedong.
    The results of Nixon's visit was a shifting in the Cold War balance.

  • The Gang of Four Arrested

    The Gang of Four Arrested
    The Gang of Four were said to have controlled the main parts of the Communist Party of China during the latter stages of the cultural revolution. They were labeled two major "counter revolutionary forces" of the cultural revolution. Major celebrations were brought about the streets of Beijing on the downfall of the Gang of Four on October 6, 1976.

  • One Child Policy Instituted

    This policy was introduced and enforced in 1979 to slow economic and environmental problems in China. With their population being extremely big, and birth rates being extremely high they wanted to be able to control their country in order to provide for them. Until the 1960's government encouraged families to have more children because Mao's belief that more people empowered the country. In rural areas families are allowed two children without having penalties.

    Tiananmen Square Protest

    These protest took place in the spring of 1989 was supported from city residents exposed the issues in China's political leadership. Many university students gathered in Tiananmen Square. The protesters wanted freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and the restoration of workers ' control over industry. There was also a student led hunger strike, and later party authorities declared martial law on May 20 and as many as 300,00 troops were mobilized to Beijing.

  • Building of the three gorges Dam

    The three Gorges Dam is located in Yiling District Yichang. The body of the dam was completed in 2006. The dam was intende to increase the shhipping capacity of Yangzte River. The project is seen as a social economic success according to the Chinese governement.

  • Hong Kong returned to China

    Hong Kong returned to China
    This event is said to have marked the end of the british rule in Hong Kong. Hong Kong was acquired by three seperate treaties, the control of the new territories had a lease. However it did not stop the development of Hong Kong. It was considered not practical to seperate three territories and only return the new territories. After the expiry of the lease it became of importance for Hong Kong's development.

  • Macau returned to China

    The history of Macau is traced back to the Qin Dynasty, when Macau was placed under the jurisdiction of Panyu county. In the 16th century the Portugues arrived and wanted to obtain ships in Macau's harbors to carry out trading activities. They eventually established a permanent settlement in Macau,and payed a rent of 500 taels. The government of Porugal withdrew troops from Macau, in favour of the People's Republic, and started negotiations to return Macau to China
  • Hainan Island incident

    This incident was an international dispute between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China. Of the American Aircraft 24 members were interrogated by the Chinese authorities until the US delivered a statement regarding the incident.
