    1st Opium War
    China's attempt to stop Great Britain from selling Opium to China. It was hurting the poeple of China and causing lots of death.
  • China/Japan War

    China/Japan War
    Communists and Nationalists unite to fight against Japan successfully. At the end of the war, the Communists had grown stronger.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    How China rebelled against Great Britain, France, Germany and other Western powers invading them. A martial arts group that fought back (were called boxers).
  • Open Door Policy

    Open Door Policy
    Policy promoted by US Secretary of State, John Hay that stated that not one country should take total control of the trade in China and the trade should be spread among everyone equally.
  • Communist Party Formed

    Communist Party Formed
    Some people did not agree with the Nationalist ways and created this to make everything more equal. Mao Zedong soon became the Communist leader.
  • The Long March

    The Long March
    The Nationalist Party set out to eliminate the Communist Party so the Communists fled to northwest China.
  • Mao Takes Power

    Mao Takes Power
    The Nationalists flee to Taiwan because the Communist parties (Mao) have gained power in China.
  • Great Leap Forward

    Mao's main campaign aimed to make China completely Communist. Caused lots of famine and death in China.

    Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution
    Chairman Mao's attempt at a phase of revolution. It took away an upper class and made everyone equal.
  • Nixon Visits China

    Nixon Visits China
    President Nixon of the United States meets with Chairman Mao to open up trading and other relations with China after 25 years of isolation.
  • Mao Dies

    Mao Dies
    Chairman Mao perishes as does the Cultural Revolution with him.

    Students were protesting in downtown Beijing for more freedom and the Chinese government sent military forces to take action against it, violently.
