    Taiping Rebellion

    The Taiping Rebellion was between December 1850 and August 1864, led by a man named Hong Xiuquan. Hong created an army of followers and took over part of their country. They were later shut down by the government. In all it cost over 20 million lives.

  • Wuchang Uprising

    The Wuchang Uprising happened on accident when a bomb went off on accident and sent one of the revolutionaries to the hospital. When their identities were discovered, the government officials wanted to hunt them down and kill them.

    The Japanese planted a bomb close to a railway to attempt to hit a train. Although it didn't hit the train, they framed the Chinese and invaded them. It was later discovered what actually happened and Japan became to have diplomatic isolation.

    The second Sino-Japanese War was a result of the Japanese trying to take over China politically and use its resources. Other countries aided China and when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the United States declared war on Japan and bombed them. Japan later surrendered.

    The Chinese considered Taiwan a state and a part of China. The people of China and Taiwan got permission to travel back and forth between places. However, even though Taiwan is considered a part of China, it is also thought that they are on their own.

    Seventeen Point Agreement With Tibet
    This seventeen point agreement that was between China and Tibet basically explained about everything Tibet agreed to do for China, or for its own people. It also discussed how Tibet agreed that China had complete sovereignty over Tibet.

    People's Republic of China admitted in UN
    The People's Republic of China was admitted into the UN in 1971. About 70 voted yes, and 30 or so voted no. The people's republic of china was voted on several times in the past. This time they were voted in. The United Nations realized that China should change it's opinion on staying out of human affairs.

    Gang of Four Arrested
    The gang of four arrested consisted of Mao Zedong's last wife, and three other important political figures. They were arrested about a decade after Mao Zedong died, and it was a huge deal because they were important political figures who had a lot to do with the communism in China.

    The Tiananmen Square Protests started out being led by a bunch of college students wanting better meals, better education, and democracy. The government didn't think much of it at first, until more people showed up and the college students went on a hunger strike. Eventually the government used force, shooting the protesters and using tanks and military vehicles to do so.

    Building of the Three Gorges Dam
    The building of the three gorges dam was extremely important. This dam is the largest power station in the world, by hydroelectricity. It increased the shipping capacity and decreased the chances of a flood. However, it flooded anyways, creating chaos for over 1.3 million people.

    Hong Kong Returned to China
    Hong Kong returning to China was a big deal. It was also called the Handover. Technically Hong Kong never left China. It was just the end of the British effect on China. The British went back to Britian, and they had a whole Handover ceremony where British people said their farewells for the queen. It was broadcasted all over the world.

    Macau Returned to China
    On December 20, 1999, Macau returned to China. Before, the Portuguese had control and had a major influence on them. The Portuguese didn't want anything to do with Macau, so they formally withdrew from the country, removing all of their troops as well. They no longer considered it a territory, and negotiated with China to take Macau back.

  • Hainan Island Incident

    On this day in 2001, a plane collision occurred between the United States and China, causing the pilot of the Chinese aircraft to die, and the United States aircrafts passengers had to make an emergency landing in Hainan. This collision created discord between the nations, and the passengers were detained and then later released.
