The Reverend Michael King and his wife, Alberta, named their first son Michael Luther. Later, Reverend King changed his and his son's name to Martin Luther in honor of the great sixteenth-century reformer. -

Succes Amid Struggle
civil rights worker Samuel Younge, Jr., was murdered for attempting to use a whites-only restroom at an Alabama gas station. On February 1, Dr. King and 770 others demonstrators were arrested in Selma, Alabama. On February 21, Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City. -

Dr. King brought his struggle for equal rights to Chicago. -
Losing The Leader
n April 4, 1968 Dr. King was shot to death on the balcony of his motel.His murder set off rioting across the United States. Dozens of people were killed, and National Guard and federal troops were needed to restore order.
