The Bus Boycott
After Rosa Parks was arrested for violating a segregated seating arrangement on a public bus, a public meeting was called to discuss the matter. It was then decided to boycott the segregated city buses. The boycott lasted over a year until the bus companies concided. -
President of the SCLC
About 60 black ministers assembled in Atlanta to form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Martin Luther King, Jr. was elected president of the SCLC. In February 1958 the SCLC sponsored 21 mass meetings in major southern cities as part of a "Crusade for Citizenship." -
Sit-in Movement
The sit-in movement began in Greensboro, N.C., by African American students protesting segregation at lunch counters in city stores. The movement quickly spread throughout several of the nearby states. The sit-ins also gained many white sympathizers. -

Death of Martin Luther King, Jr.
As King stood on an outside balcony at the Lorraine Hotel, he was struck by a rifle bullet. He was pronounced dead at 7:00 P.M. in a Memphis hospital later that day. In December 1999, a four-acre site near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. was approved as the location for a monument to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
