North vs South The Tensions are still Rising.

    As America included more states, the North and South had many debates to decide which states would be free and which would have slavery. Henry Clay was a great compromiser he created the Missouri Compromise. It allowed the North to be free and South to have slaves. This kept the balanced.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    When Andrew Jackson became president he put a tariff. The Southern states like South Carolina didn't like tariffs and thought it only supported the North. Vice president John Calhoun went down to South Carolina and said that they shouldn't stand for the tariff. Soon South Carolina wanted to nullify the tariff but failed to as the federal goverment disapprove. It angered South Carolina and they threaten to secede. Henry Clay came to settle the fraud and lowers the tariff.

    After the war against Mexico there was a lot of new territory waiting to be claimed as slave states or free states. Henry Clay as the great compromiser that he is he created the Compromise of 1850. This made California a free state and the congress will not pass any laws banning slaves.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    The Congress passed the fugitive slave act in 1850. This law permitted the Northern states to capture runaway slaves that tried to escape to the north to be free. This law made many abolitionist realized that ending slavery was urgent. When many laws were passed this really angered the south and left an opportunity for John Brown's raid and the Cilvil war.

    As Kansas was trying to be apart of the union, there was an election for state legislature. Many people from Missouri saw this as an opportunity to vote for proslavery. This was illegal, When the election was over Kansas had a proslavery legislature. As a result many anti slavery groups started their own government. Tension broke through and proslavery groups attacked anti slavery. Soon John Brown started to murder many proslavery neighborhoods.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was known for seeing for his freedom.He was born in a free state therefore he was free man. The court thought differently. As Scott took his case to court he was soon told that even if he was born in a free state, he was African American and he was not a citizen. Therefore he was property and was still was owned by his owner and property couldn't be taken away because it was a law.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown was against slavery and so he decided to round up slaves so they could fight for their freedom. Once Brown came up with a plan, he wanted to capture the arsenal, located at Harpers Ferry. When John Brown went through his plan he unfortunately failed and him and his men were captured and 10 ere killed. As Brown was put to his died, Lincoln saluted. This issue soon led to the tensions breaking and caused a war.

    Election of 1860
    The election of 1860 was when Abraham Lincoln was elected and wins. The southern states didn't trust him. When Lincoln finally won many southern states began to secede.
