Alabama becomes the 22nd state and the 11th slave state and Maine petitions to become a free state

Missouri Bill

Feb 13, 1819

Missouri gives Congress a bill authorizing Missouri to become a slave state. James Tallmadge revises the bill to include that Missouri will later free slaves. The bill passes in the House and fails in Senate.

Thomas Ammendment

Feb 17, 1820

This amendment is proposed, stating that there will be a permanent ban made on slavery in the remaining Louisiana territory.

Senate Approves Maine Statehood Bill

Feb 19, 1820

Senate approves Maine statehood bill that was combined with Missouri Bill. House rejects it and Senate decides to consider the two states differently.
