  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    "equal but separate accommodations for the white and colored races." It was in favor of segregation and said the races are equal but one race gets better conditions. This angered the people and made them want to speak up about the equal rights they had.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    there were actually five separate cases all dealing with the segregation being upheld at school. the court case was ruled as a violation of the 14th amendment. this was where not only Kansas but other states learned that making two separate buildings for different color students is also segregation and it is unconstitutional.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    This black teen was "lynched" (killed) for flirting with a white 14 year-old girl. he was only there to visit his family in Mississippi but he never saw daylight again. this showed how unjust the people were, they couldn't bare the thought of a white and a black to be partners.
  • Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks stayed seated at her seat when she was told to move to the back of the bus. This riled up the black community and made them start bus boycotts. This was seen as a negative effect and mistake by the bus because they had many people against them.
  • Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Martin Luther King

    Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Martin Luther King
    protested segregation through non-violent resistance. They did marches and sit-ins as their protests. This allowed for there to be a difference in the "soul of america" through reasoning.
  • Little Rock Nine and Central High School

    Little Rock Nine and Central High School
    Nine black students were scheduled to enter high school but the community was not pleased. the governor sent the national guard to block the students from entering. This was later taken to the supreme court where they ruled in favor of the students but only one managed to graduate because the curriculum was harder on them than the rest of the students.
  • Greensboro Sit-In

    Greensboro Sit-In
    Greensboro North Carolina was were sit-ins were being used at the non-violent protest. The people would go into dinners and be denied service, screamed at, hit, and even spat on but they stayed to show that they could not brake them. This would lead to the white people understanding that what they do will not affect them.
  • Freedom Ride/ Freedom Riders

    these non-violent protesters would get on greyhound buses and ride them. even though they were peaceful the people burned down a bus and once the people escaped from the bus they beat them some even to death. this allowed for awareness to the cruelty of the peaceful protests.
  • March on Washington

    This was where Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous "i have a dream speech". this march was used to raise awareness for jobs and freedom of the black community. This speech gave hope and it fueled the thought of success for all of the people who wanted justice.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) & Freedom Summer

    this committee was in favor of nonviolence and pro civil rights. the freedom summer focus on exploiding the violence blacks in mississippi face on a day to day basis. these raised awareness to how they were truly treated.
  • Civil Rights Act

    this act was signed by president Lyndon Johnson to prevent discrimination in public places, work, and in schools. They had to convince republicans to support the bill. This act set forth a new beginning for the blacks, it prohibited the discrimination and segregation of them in all public areas.
  • Assasination of Malcolm X

    Malcolm was assassinated by his enemy, Thomas Hagen, while he was at an organization of afro-American unity. He was killed because he said "chickens coming home to roost" on the topic of Kennedys assassination. This showed that even a "pro-violent" leader of the civil rights movement was stoppable.
  • Voting Rights Act

    this outlawed the descriminatory voting rules. mainly it did not allow for the requirement of literacy tests when going to vote. This allowed more black peoples votes to count and they could finally make a difference in the polls.
  • Assasination of MLK

    He was hot by James Earl Ray while he was on the balcony at the hotel he was staying at in Memphis. He was killed because of his success with bringing rights and attention to the black community. this infuriated the people and they worked even harder to make his dream come reality.
