Typhoid fever is a bacterial disease yhat killed many people. Almroth Wright developed the vaccine and it was offered to those in the military first (due to their conditions) so it took a while for the general public to gain access to it. -
Frederick Banting- Insulin
Federick Banting discovered insulin when he was examining the pancreatic extracts of a dog. The hormone was then later injected in a diabetic dog and it worked, and from there the discovery evolved into what a lot of diabetic people use today. -
Emil Behring- Tetanus
Tetanus is a disease caused by an open wound being infected with the tetani bacteria. Behring was in charge of the small group that came up with the vaccine, and there became a 95% decrease in the disease when it was created. -
Alexander Fleming- Penicillin
In 1928, the Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming. It was found when Fleming discovered mold had contaminated his Petri dishes due to his messy habits in the lab. He realized that the mold was stopping the growth of bacteria, and studied the mold more to see what the mold was capable of. -
Jonas Salk and Thomas Francis- Flu Vaccine
Salk and Francis were able to create the flu vaccine by carefully examining the virus and finding a way to prevent it. Thanks to the vaccine, the amount of people dying and getting the disease has decreased tremendously. -
Jonas Salk- Polio Vaccine
Before the vaccine was found, polio was a disease that was very common in America. Jonas Salk was able to save many lives after he found the inactivated polio vaccine, and the disease then turned rare in America. -
Thomas Peebles- Measles
Thomas Peebles was able to isolate the measles virus during an outbreak of the disease at a school. With permission, he took samples of kids who had the disease so he could access the virus, and from there the vaccine was created. -
Maurice Hilleman- Mumps
Maurice Hilleman discovered the vaccine for mumps with the help of his daughter. He used the virus he secluded from his young daughter (Jeryl Lynn) -
Louis Pasteur- Rabies
Louis Pasteur is known for inventing many different diseases and an important one is Rabies. Here in America, it is common to see many people with pets in their home, so the vaccine helped ensure that if their pet had Rabies and bit them, there would be a strong chance of recovery for the person. -
Pablo Valenzuela- Hepatitis B
Valenzuela was able to create a vaccine for the liver disease hepatitis B. This disease can cause cancer so the vaccine is considered the first cancer vaccine created.
