Arrival of the First Fleet
Britain needed a new colony for the re-locatons of convicts because of its overcrowded prisons. The settlers sent over 162,000 convicts to Australia in 806 ships. Eleven of these ships were part of the "First Fleet'. Before 1788, Australia was populated by about 300.000 aborigines. -
The Gold Rush Era
The discovery of gold was first began in 1851 in Bathurst, New South Wales and Victoria. The news of gold discoveries in Australia captured the world and sparked a massive wave of migration such as Eruopeans, Chinese, United Kingdom , North Americans etc. -

When all the states federated in 1901, immigration in Australia changed. Instead of each state having its own system, The Commonwealth was founded. When the war ended, the government took an approach to migration. A Prime Minister called "Ben Chifley" declared a powerful enemy will strike Australia. He said "We must populate Australia fast before another war would begin." In 1945, the Department of Immigration was constructed. 70, 000 people were needed a year. Most immigrants arrived in ships at Syndey & Melbourne. All assisted immigrants over 16 must get into the habit of having a job & work. -
White Australian Policy to Multicuturalism
After World War II, Australia launched a program of immigraton. Hundred of thousands ofEuropeans and British migrated to Australia.During the time, it was known as "Assisted Migration Scheme". Afterwards, it became known as "Ten Pound Poms". The program was then extended to countries such as Italy and Netherlands. The qualifications were straightforward; Migrants needed to be healthy and under 45 years, although under the "White Australian Policy", people from different races found it hard. -
Vietnam War Migration
The Vietnam war caused disruption for many people in the north and south of Vietnam. Many people fled the country or settle in Saigon and Da Nang. During the war, they heared about the government sponsor program all over the world such as US, Australia etc. Between the end of the war, almost 1.5 million people were settled in new areas. Since the war, Vietnam has had an substantial disruption leading the Vietnamese to flee across the world. Most of them settled in th US, Then Australia. -

Most migrations were being forced because of the wars and disruption happening such as World War 1 and 2 and the Vietnam war. Most modern migration were because of Education, Money, Jobs, Freedom, etc. People are always seeking better opportunities in life. 50 million people from large distance around Asia, were moved to SouthEastern Asia. Many migrants were from South China & India.
