Indian Removal Act
American Settlers found Native Americans unwanted and pressured the government to remove them from theyre land which the Americans took. Natives did not want to assimilate and turn away from their beliefs. whites wanted even more land therefore they were removed from the southeast in 1830 when The Indian Removal Act was signed into law by President Andrew Jackson. This authorized the whites to land west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands. -
Trail Of Tears
Native Americans (The five tribes) suffered due to the Indian removal act where American settlers pressured the government to remove Indians from the Southeast to Oklahoma. So many Natives died on the way due to sickness, Climate, old age and other natural causes. -
The Civil War
The civil war was a war between The Union (North) and the Confederacy being the South. This war was fought over slaves and political control. -
The Reconstruction Treaties
The 5 Tribes entered into treaties with the US clarifying the rights of freed slaves. The treaties were about the Tribes that sided with the Confederacy. -
The Dawes Act
The Dawes act divided up reservation land into individual plots for ownership. This made way for white settlement assimilation tactics. -
The Oklahoma Land Rush
Land in the Indian territory was opened for settlement and many Americans rushed for this land. This was the first major white settlement in the territory, the land was very cheap. -
The Indian Reorganization Act
The Indian Reorganization act was in an attempt to assimilate the natives. Natives were encouraged to leave their beliefs and adapt to Christianity and American ways.
