The Indian Removal Act
This act signed by Andrew Jackson granted land west of the Mississippi to be turned into Indian lands. Natives would move and be forced into the unsettled land. -
The Trail of Tears
60,000 Native Americans in the eastern United States were forcibly moved. They were moved to Indian territory or modern-day Oklahoma. -
The Civil War
The United States was split into the Union and the Confederacy over arguments of slavery. Some tribes sided with the Confederates due to them also owning slaves and many natives died. -
The Reconstruction Treaties
These treaties address the status of freed slaves within the 5 tribes. It also strengthened peace between the U.S. and the tribes. -
The Dawes Act
This act made it so that reserved land was broken into individual plots for natives. The remaining land was sold off to white settlers. -
The Oklahoma Land Rush
Land in the Indian territory was open to white settlers. Over 50,000 people were lined up to get a piece of the land. Most natives were not happy about their land being given away. -
The Indian Reorganization Act
This act allowed Native Americans to get more control over their land. This let Natives form tribal governments that others would recognize.
