    Robert Hooke used a microscope to investigate cork. He noticed that cork cells were just dead plant cells. This made him only see cell walls. Robert said that the cork was made out of small boxes that he described as cellulae. Since then, the word cellulae has become 'cells.'

    Antonie van Leeuwenhoek looked at pond water under a microscope. He noticed that there was small thing moving. Those small things he was seeing were called unicellular living things. He was the first person to discover human red blood cells and bacteria. Antonie improved early microscopes and achieved a magnification up to x250.
