Was the founder of modern Bacteriology, developing a method to isolate the microorganisms in a pure culture from diseased tissue. He also perfected the techniques of identification of isolated bacteria. -
His research was based largely on soil microorganisms and discovered streptomycin and other antibiotics used today.
