Michelle's Reading History

  • Corduroy

    Corduroy
As a young child I was introduced to the book Corduroy because it was my mom's favorite when she was a child. It was incredibly influential for me.
  • Dr. Seuss

    Dr. Seuss
I was also introduced to the work of Dr. Seuss at a young age. The two books that stick out to me the most are The Lorax and The Sneeches. These stories shaped my thinking as a child and helped me to become a better person overall.
  • Shel Silverstein

    Shel Silverstein
My brother and I both read a lot of Shel Silverstein and his books or poems. My favorite poem was called "Sick." I had it memorized and I would recite it frequently.
  • No Moon No Milk

    No Moon No Milk
This was my favorite book for a lot of my childhood. I had this book on cassette tape and I would listen to it over and over again. It was about a cow who wanted to go to the moon and refused to give her owner milk until he took her to the moon. This book clearly has a message that I did not realize until a few years ago while analyzing children's books in a women's studies class.
  • Reading Rainbow and Wishbone

    Reading Rainbow and Wishbone
I used to spend summers with my grandparents in New Mexico. I watched a lot of PBS during that time and I started to really enjoy both Reading Rainbow and Wishbone. I remember buying some of the actually classic books that were featured on both shows and being excited to read them because of that Jack Russell Terrier in costume.
  • Frog and Toad

    Frog and Toad
This book also sticks out in my memory. I believe it around the time my parents had purchased Hooked on Phonics for me. It is one of the first books I remember reading on my own.
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I remember being introduced to this book by a friend of mine in around 3rd grade. I remember being intrigued by it but it did not hold my attention at the time. I came back to this book years later and read the whole Narnia series and C.S. Lewis has become one of my favorite authors since then. I enjoy pretty much all of his writing and his general style. His books have helped me through some of the most difficult times of my life.
  • A Wrinkle in Time

    A Wrinkle in Time
I read this book probably around fifth grade. I am a person who struggles with getting through books that do not hold my attention and this is one book that held my attention and I have gone back to read it multiple times. I have also other books by the same author and I enjoy them.
  • A Walk to Remember

    A Walk to Remember
I read this book in seventh grade. It was just before the movie came out and I decided that I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie. People had always said that the book is always better than the movie and I wanted to see that for myself. It was correct. I loved reading this book. I remember finishing the book in my seventh grade classroom before class started, I started crying at my desk. I did also read this book multiple times. I read other Nicholas Sparks books later.
  • Le Petit Prince

    Le Petit Prince
I found this book much later in my life than I would have liked. I was given a chapter to read from this book my senior year of high school in a Theology class and I absolutely fell in love. I immediately purchased this book and read it. I quote it frequently in my life. I own it in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and I have a Pop-up book version of it. This book has changed my life and I see evidence of that everyday.
