4500B.C.-4000B.C. Sumer first settled by humans known as Ubaid people in the Mesopotamia region of the Fertile Crescent situated between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. They are thought to be the creators of civilizations. They were known for their language, governance, and architecture. They built their villages and towns around their farming communities. The Ubaid people are known for weaving textiles, carpentry, pottery, and enjoying beer. They developed through farming and raising cattle. -

Dynasty
The first dynasty of Sumer was Etana of Kish who "stabilized all the lands". A more famous ruler is Gilgamesh who took control around 2700 B.C.
Sumer went through many rulers in their time and they grew and expanded and the last one was Ur-Nammu. -

Fall of Sumerians
Elamites came in and took control and the Amorites had begun overtaking the Sumerian population.
They were eventually absorbed into Amorite culture, becoming Babylonians and ending Sumerians -

The city of Babylon makes an appearance after the fall of Ur-Nammu. The Amorites were in control. -

The Babylonian people built temples. Hammurabi was known for the making of law codes. "Eye for an eye". His ruling was harsh. -

Kings are known as the First Dynasty of Babylon.
Hammurabi ruled and their area was called Mât Akkadî. Then called Babylonia. It was the most fertile and rich spot in the ancient world.

Fall of Babylon
Hammurabi had to fight many enemies at the same time, and they started to loose. Hammurabi dies. In 1595 Hittite king Mursilis I got Babylon, and took away the statue of the supreme god of Babylonia, Marduk. -

The Assyrians
Many Assyrian leaders tried to take over Babylon. The Assyrians would constantly invade Babylon and they became under Assyrian rule from 729-627 B.C. -

Dynasty
Assyrian ruler Sennacherib reigned 705-681 BCE.
He had extreme measures that were impious and he was after assassinated by his sons. The new leader, Esarhaddon, rebuilt Babylon and returned it to its former glory.
They developed and expanded the empire to include the Middle East and Egypt, Babylonia, Israel, and Cypress. They reached their peak when King Tiglath-Pileser I was ruling.Sargon II, Sennacherib, and Ashurbanipal were a few other rulers. They were very powerful. -

Development/Characteristics
Tiglath-Pileser III built roads throughout the empire that allowed armies and messengers to travel faster.
They were experts at siege warfare. They used battering rams, siege towers, diverting water supplies in order to take a city and other tactics. They had huge walls built to withstand a siege, many canals. They were also known for being great fighter and it was part of their life. -

Fall Of Assyrians Rise of New Babylons
The Babylonians defeated the Assyrian army. And Chaldean named Nabopolassar took the throne. -

Developement
Nebuchadnezzar II (604-561 BCE), renovated the city and boasted some the most beautiful and impressive structures in Mesopotamia. In his ruling, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the famous Ishtar Gate was built. -
539 BCE
New Babylon Falls
Nabonidus and Belshazzar were a few more kings that served. In 539 BCE they fell to the Persians under Cyrus the Great .
