  • 5000 BCE

    Sumer Begins 5000 BC

    The Sumer form the first towns and cities. They use irrigation to farm large areas of land 5000 BC.
  • 4000 BCE

    First Writing in Sumer 4000-3300 BC

    The Sumerians invent the first writing system and they wrote on clay tablets 3300 BC. 4000 BC They have many powerful city-states. They made Ziggurats in the center of their town for their gods 4000 BC. Lower Mesopotamia is inhabited by many Sumer city-states 3500 BC.
  • 3200 BCE

    Sumer 3200-2330 BC

    Sumerians begin to use the wheel on their vehicles 3200 BC. King Gilgamesh rules Ur in 2700 BC. 2330 BC Sargon I conquers most of the Sumer city-states and makes the Akkadian Empire the first empire.
  • 1792 BCE

    Babylon 1792-1750 BC

    Hammurabi Becomes King and makes the Code of Hammurabi and
    Babylon soon takes over much of Mesopotamia 1792 BC. The first Assyrian Empire is taken over by Babylon 1781. 1750 BC Hammurabi dies and the Babylon Empire begins to fall apart.
  • 1360 BCE

    Assyria 1360-705 BC

    1225 BC the Assyrians capture Babylon. 721 BC King Sargon II takes control of Assyria. 709 BC Sargon takes control of the city of Babylon. 705 BC Sennacherib becomes King and moves The capital Nineveh.
  • 668 BCE

    Assyria 668-550 BC

    Ashurbanipal becomes the last great king he makes a Library at Nineveh 668 BC. 626 BC The king dies and Assyria crumbles. 616 BC Nabopolassar takes control of Babylon and becomes king. 604 BC Nebuchadnezzar becomes king of the Babylon Empire.
