Home Care
During the 1920s to 1930s the option of home care became available to the mentally ill. This was an effort to decrease costs and overcrowding. However, relatives refused to care for them or they had trouble managing them. -
American Psycological Association
During 1921, the American Medico-Psychological Association(AMPA) became the American Psychological Association. -
Insulin and Epileptics
During 1928, Manfred Sakel a Viennese physician discovered that insulin users showed a decrease in psychotic symptoms. He also discovered that epileptics have less risk when developing schizophrenia. -

The Great Depression
The Great Depression led to mistreatment of the mentally ill. There was no money for treatment so they were treated badly. -
Lobotomy
A huge surgical procedure was invented for mentally ill patients. It was called a lobotomy and involved severing the nerve fiber from the frontal lobe. -
Social Security Act
It provided support for those who didn't qualify for the social security disability insurance. -

World War II
During and after World War II psychiatrist came to several realizations about mental health. One of the biggest ones was that the environment a stable person is in can affect their mental health. They also developed non-institutional treatment. -
Improvement of Medication
When new drugs were developed to help the mentally ill, it was decided that they could be free to leave asylums and live. New medication helped many patients because the past option often left the patient with serious mental harm. The main medication developed was Chlorpromazine which helped calm psychotic patients. -
Social Security Disability Insurence
Helped everyone with any type of disability. Helped mentally ill receive treatment.
