The previous decade had bulkier clothing. However, in the 1870s clothing became narrower, neckties became wider, and more colors and designs were being seen in men's clothing.

Trousers and sleeves in this decade became even more narrow and tight fitting. The neckline also came a lot closer to the throat instead of being wide and open which added to the slender look. Trousers with striped patterns started to become popular in this decade and added some flair to men's wardrobes.

The big difference in clothing in the 1890s were the length of the coats. This was intentional so that the cuffs of their shirts would peak through.

Coats became longer and went down to the knees. Cuffs on the ends of trousers went away and creases became less popular. A notable difference in men's fashion is the introduction of walking sticks.
