1860 Fashion
Sewing machine introduced, favored looser fitting coats and trousers. Coat sleeves were very wide at the elbows, narrowing at the shoulder and cuff, a design sometimes referred to as a "balloon sleeve" -
1870s Fashion
The rise of the sack suit to widespread popularity, on any street many fashionable young men could be seen in narrowly tailored sack suits. It also remained common for gentlemen to pair mismatched separates instead of a suit, particularly common was fawn or light brown trousers with black coats. -
1880s Fashion
Short, narrowly fitted jackets with narrow sleeves were popular during the 1880s. The lapels of the jacket were extremely narrow and small, and the jacket fit close to the throat, barely revealing the necktie. Cutaway jackets introduced. -
1890s Fashion
Men wore vests, or waistcoats as they were known, and often had many of them in different colors and materials as a way to vary their work wardrobe. Pants worn for daytime had a high waist and were cut slim with a flat front, no pleats. -
1900s Fashion
Clothing was relatively formal, with specific outfits worn at different times of the day. Interestingly, it was during the 1900-1919 years that for the first time, clothing started to be mass-produced. This reduced the need to have something tailor-made and ready made clothing more accessible for all, regardless of wealth or social position.
