  • Drinking

    Drinking
    In the late 1800's middle class men would go to the bar and drink after their shift was done. The bars were small and most of the time crowded and loud. Most bars back then as today are attached to a hotel or inn. They would go and spend the night drinking and spending their pay check. I some places alcohol was easier to get then water. Some people opposed these bars claiming that alcohol was the root of evil, but some were pro alcohol and that led to tensions later.

    Lacrosse Club Of Montreal
    In 1856 The Montreal Lacrosse Club was the first organized club in Canada at the time. They wrote the official rules to be used everywhere in 1844. They took most of the rules from the natives who had been playing the game for hundreds of years. This was a men only club. They usually played other teams made up of first nations and usually lost.     Across the country gentlemen's clubs were gaining popularity and many men wanted to be a part of one. In 1862 the Halifax cub was established. The men would mainly talk about business, drink, and smoke cigars with their friends. It was on the waterfront of the Atlantic Ocean which was very expensive property. It was started by 15 men. Their names were Edward Binney, William Cunard, and Alfred G Jones just to name a few.

    The Opera
    Through out the 1850's- the 1880's wealthy families would go for a night out to the opera house. This activity was reserved for wealthy men and their families to enjoy. You would never see a miller at the opera enjoying the night with his wife. For example the St. Lawrence Hall was a very popular spot in Toronto. It was opened in 1850 and was a concert venue until 1890. Many powerful men have spent evenings at the hall like Sir John A MacDonald, George Brown and many more.

It was cheaper than the opera which was for the wealthy men and woman and was more exiting to these men.
