    In the 1880's, men would often wear long overcoats. The formal overcoats had insides that were usually laced with satin or silk and draped off the shoulders diagonally. They also had overcoats for lounging. The collar of these would be long and narrow. Both the formal and the lounge overcoats were very long and usually when down to almost the knees. These overcoats had to be tailored and were not mass produced.

    In the 1890's, Men's jackets/overcoats got noticeably shorter and narrower. The sleeves on the jacket were also shorter and narrower. Overcoats/jackets from the 1880's were bigger and longer compared to the jackets in the 1890's. Overall, the clothing for men in 1890's was usually mass produced clothing that could be worn as work attire or formal attire

    In the 1900's, men wore formal and work suits. What suit they wore usually depended on their age and the time of day. However, for both morning wear and evening wear, the overcoats/jackets were long in the back and shorter in the front. The coats extended to the back of the knee in the back and stopped at the hips in the front. This is different than it was in the 1890's because, it is much longer than the jackets that were being produced back then. However, these are also mass produced.

    In the 1910's, men wore mostly sack suits. These type of suits grew in popularity in the late 1900's but, became much more common in the 1910's. The jackets on these suits were shorter; they went down to the hips and were wider than previous jackets/overcoats. These jackets were loose fitting and described as box shaped. These jackets were often striped to make the men have a slimmer look.

    In the 1920's, men began wearing slimmer suit jackets. These jackets were slim fit and usually had bold colors for the time period. They would rarely be black unless it was for a very formal event. A big different between these jackets and some of the previous decades jackets are what they are made of. In the 1920's men's jackets were made of different types of wool or corduroy. In the late 1920's jackets began to slightly become looser fitting but the slim fit look was still very popular.
